Air Source Heat Pumps Viewpark, Scotland

Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But this raises a question – what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can be performed even in cold climates – with the market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps actually being the much colder Scandinavian countries.

Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper to run than systems like stoves, they’re also much more effective. An Air Source Heat Pump will provide three times the energy it requires to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.

This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.

The Pump works by absorbing the ambient heat in the air from the outside into a liquid refrigerant. Now inside the pump and with the liquid, it is circulated and compressed into a gas. The circulation process increases the temperature of the gas – which is then cycled through your homes heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water.

So how does it all work?

Using its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air.

The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.

With its relative simplicity and intuitive design, the myriad of issues and need for extensive repairs faced by systems like Boilers can be avoided by an Air Source Heat Pump. Many of the components that make up the Pump can carry extensive warranties and are designed to last long. With a strong lifespan of 20 years, an Air Source Heat Pump can easily outlive other, older systems.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
