Air Source Heat Pumps Bridge of Allan, Scotland

Air Source Heat Pumps are a rising star in the world of alternative energy services, offering a solid means by which to cut the growing cost of energy bills – especially as older heating services become increasingly expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.

Whereas Wooden Stoves and Oil boilers convert heat from fuel, and electric generation converts energy into heat, the Air Source Heat Pump does not convert or generate heat. Instead, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. Even in colder climates, this process can be performed – with colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pumps provide not just a significant benefit to saving costs but are even more efficient at generating energy. Air Source Heat Pumps can generate three times the energy that it requires to run..

Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So, how does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. It can do so even at temperatures below -20c, because no matter how cold it is, there is always some heat within the air. The Air Source Heat Pump is usually installed outdoors, often at the side or back of the property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.

So how does it all work?

With its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.

The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.

First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.

Many have extensive experience dealing with the issues of an acting up boiler, and long back and forths with engineers and plumbers trying to get them to work properly. But unlike Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps are built out of relatively simple components and require basic maintenance, and are often backed by strong warranties.Air Source Heat Pumps are likewise tend to have a longer lifespan than a Boiler, often lasting a solid 20 years.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
