What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Heat Pumps do not generate or convert heat from fuel, as do Oil Boilers or Wood Stoves do. Rather, they transfer the existing (and always present) ambient heat in the air outside of the home into the home – a process that be performed even in colder climates. One of the leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps is actually Scandinavia, who have been leading the market since the 1970s.
Air Source Heat Pump Systems are not just a great way to save money over older means of heating – they are also significantly more effective, able to provide three times the energy that they require to run.
Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.
How Does It Work?
With a basic understanding of the Air Source Heat Pump, we can move onto the next question of how does it work?
In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IEven at temperatures well below -15c, the Air Source Heat Pump is fully capable of the process. The Air Source Heat Pump is capable of doing this even in temperatures below -15c. Ultimately the Heat Pump is superb at drawing the heat from the air.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
So, there is no need to worry about receiving adequate heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.
So how does the Heat Pump Process work?
With its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump is able to absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The refrigerant liquid is then turned into a gas which can be passed into the heating systems of the home – so radiators, hot water, etc.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
Many people have had to deal with issues poised by a boiler failing. But unlike Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps are built out of relatively simple components and require basic maintenance, and are often backed by strong warranties.Air Source Heat Pumps are likewise tend to have a longer lifespan than a Boiler, often lasting a solid 20 years.
If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
