Air Source Heat Pumps Tillicoultry, Scotland

Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. Instead, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can be performed even in cold climates – with the market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps actually being the much colder Scandinavian countries.

Not only do heat pump systems cost less than systems like stoves, but they are often much more effective. Air Source Heat Pumps can furthermore provide up to three times the energy than it takes to run.

Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.

How Does It Work?

Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?

In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. The Air Source Heat Pump is usually installed outdoors, often at the side or back of the property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. This fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas, which is warmed by the process. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.

So how does it work?

With its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.

The refrigerant liquid is then turned into a gas which can be passed into the heating systems of the home – so radiators, hot water, etc.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.

Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.

With its relative simplicity and intuitive design, the myriad of issues and need for extensive repairs faced by systems like Boilers can be avoided by an Air Source Heat Pump.Backed by extensive warranties, many of the components that make up the Air Source Heat Pump are already long lasting. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.

An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
