What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.
Whereas other heating systems, like wood stoves and oil boilers, work by burning fuel or by converting electricity to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not generate or convert energy into heat. The Air Source Heat Pump works instead by transferring existing ambient heat in the air outside the home into the home. This can be performed even in colder climate, as there is always some ambient heat present in the air. Many of the colder Scandinavian countries are actually market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Added to the benefit of cost saving the benefit of the greater generation of energy by an Air Source Heat Pump. Indeed, an Air Source Heat Pump can generate three times the energy that is required by it to run.
Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
So, there is no need to worry about receiving adequate heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
The Heat Pump works by ‘absorbing’ the ambient heat via its refrigerant fluid. Within the pump, this refrigerant fluid is circulated and compressed into a gas.The compression processes increases the temperature, and the gas is cycled through your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water.
Rough, the process works as following.
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The refrigerant liquid becomes a gas, which is then compressed and passed into the homes heating systems – so radiators, hot water or underfloor heating systems.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many people have had to deal with issues poised by a boiler failing. But unlike Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps are built out of relatively simple components and require basic maintenance, and are often backed by strong warranties.Air Source Heat Pumps boast a strong lifespan of some 20 years, able to outlast many older systems.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
