Air Source Heat Pumps St Andrews, Scotland

With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But this raises a question – what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. Rather Air Source Heat Pumps make use of the ambient warmth outside the house always present in the air, which is then transferred inside the house. This process can easily performed even in colder climates and weather, with the colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in the technology.

Added to the benefit of cost saving the benefit of the greater generation of energy by an Air Source Heat Pump. Air Source Heat Pumps can generate three times the energy that it requires to run..

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IEven at temperatures well below -15c, the Air Source Heat Pump is fully capable of the process. The Air Source Heat Pump is capable of doing this even in temperatures below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing ambient heat from the air.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.

So how does it work? Roughly,

With its refrigerant liquid, the Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat.
The refrigerant liquid becomes a gas, which is then compressed and passed into the homes heating systems – so radiators, hot water or underfloor heating systems.
As the transferring of the heat occurs, the gas is condensed into liquid again, allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.

First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.

With its relative simplicity and intuitive design, the myriad of issues and need for extensive repairs faced by systems like Boilers can be avoided by an Air Source Heat Pump. Many of the components that make up the Pump can carry extensive warranties and are designed to last long. With an average lifespan of nearly 20 years an Air Source Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler.

An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
