Air Source Heat Pumps Springburn, Scotland
A rising star in the world of alternative energy services, Air Source Pumps have become a popular means to cut the cost of energy bills – especially as older services become increasing expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can easily performed even in colder climates and weather, with the colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in the technology.
Air Source Heat Pump Systems do not only save money over older and traditional systems of energy – they are also much more effective, with Air Source Heat Pumps able to provide three times the energy that is required by the Pump for it to run.
Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Even at temperatures below -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home, as there is always some ambient warmth in the air. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Heat Pump works by ‘absorbing’ the ambient heat via its refrigerant fluid. Within the pump, this refrigerant fluid is circulated and compressed into a gas. This compression process increases the temperature of the gas, which is then cycled through your heating system – giving you warmth and hot water.
So how does it work? Roughly,
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.
What are the benefits
An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
Many people can provide stories about having to deal with an acting up boiler system – but these back and forth issues with a boiler are evaded by the simplicity and intuitive design of an Air Source Heat Pump. Many components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are designed to be long lasting and are backed by strong warranties. With a strong lifespan of 20 years, an Air Source Heat Pump can easily outlive other, older systems.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
