What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Traditional means of heating the home usually work by the generation or conversion of fuel into heat – i.e., an oil boiler works via oil fuel, a wood stove via burning wood – but an Air Heat Pump does not do this. They instead work by transferring the existing ambient heat in the air outside your home into your house. This transferring can be performed even in colder climates, as there is always some heat present in the air. Many of the colder Scandinavian countries are actually market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pump Systems are not just a great way to save money over older means of heating – they are also significantly more effective, able to provide three times the energy that they require to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?

Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. The Air Source Heat Pump is usually installed outdoors, often at the side or back of the property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.

So even during a harsh and cold Scottish winter, there will be no need to worry about receiving adequate heat. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.

The Air Source Heat Pump works by absorbing the heat in the air into a liquid refrigerant.Inside the heat pump, it circulates and is compressed into a gas. The circulation process increases the temperature of the gas – which is then cycled through your homes heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water.

So how does it all work?

With its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump is able to absorb the ambient heat in the air.

The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.

A lot of people can provide extensive stories horror systems about an acting up boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity and intuitive design means they require very basic and simple maintenance. Many components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are designed to be long lasting and are backed by strong warranties. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.

If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
