Air Source Heat Pumps Rutherglen, Scotland
Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- How does it work?
- What are the benefits?
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
So, whereas other heating systems work by burning fuel (i.e., a wood stove) or by converting electricity (solar panels) in order to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not actually create or generate heat in the first place. Instead, the Air Source Heat Pump works by transferring existing the ambient heat in the air outside into the home. This transferring can be performed even in colder climates, as there is always some heat present in the air. Indeed, many of the colder Scandinavian countries are market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps and have been since the 1970s.
Added to the benefit of cost saving the benefit of the greater generation of energy by an Air Source Heat Pump. An Air Source Heat Pump can actually generate three times the energy that it requires to run..
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. It can do so even at temperatures below -20c, because no matter how cold it is, there is always some heat within the air. The Air Source Heat Pump tends to be installed outdoors – usually at the side or the back of your property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Pump works by absorbing the ambient heat in the air from the outside into a liquid refrigerant.Inside the heat pump, it circulates and is compressed into a gas. This increases the temperature, which is then cycled through the heating system within your home, providing you with heating and hot water.
So how does the Heat Pump Process work?
With its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The refrigerant liquid is then turned into a gas which can be passed into the heating systems of the home – so radiators, hot water, etc.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many people have long horror stories of dealing with a boiler system acting up, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity means they need only basic maintenance requirements, such as the cleaning of the filters. Air Source Heat Pumps also tend to be built from long lasting components, as well as strong warranties and guarantees that ensure you are insulated any technical issues. By virtue of their solid, 20 year lifespan, Air Source Heat Pumps can easily outlive boiler systems.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
