Air Source Heat Pumps Prestwick, Scotland

Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.

Whereas other heating systems, like wood stoves and oil boilers, work by burning fuel or by converting electricity to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not generate or convert energy into heat. The Air Source Heat Pump works instead by transferring existing ambient heat in the air outside the home into the home. This can be performed even in colder climate, as there is always some ambient heat present in the air. Indeed, many of the colder Scandinavian countries are market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps and have been since the 1970s.

Alongside the benefit of cost, Air Source Heat Pumps bring the benefit of being significantly more efficient at generating energy. Indeed, an Air Source Heat Pump can generate three times the energy that is required by it to run.

Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?

The Air Source Heat Pump transfers energy from outside the home and into it. Even at temperatures below -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home, as there is always some ambient warmth in the air. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.

This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.

The air source heat pump works by absorbing the heat outside into a fluid within – a refrigerant. Now inside the pump and with the liquid, it is circulated and compressed into a gas. This increases the temperature, which is then cycled through the heating system within your home, providing you with heating and hot water.

To break it down.

The Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air into its refrigerant liquid.
The Heat Pumps liquid refrigerant is compressed into a gas which is cycled through the homes heating systems.
While the heat is transferred, the gas is condensed back into its liquid refrigerant form, ready to begin the whole process again.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

A lot of people can provide extensive stories horror systems about an acting up boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity and intuitive design means they require very basic and simple maintenance. Many components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are designed to be long lasting and are backed by strong warranties. With a strong lifespan of 20 years, an Air Source Heat Pump can easily outlive other, older systems.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
