Air Source Heat Pumps Musselburgh, Scotland
Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But this raises a question – what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- How does it work?
- What are the benefits?
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.
Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can be performed even in cold climates – with the market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps actually being the much colder Scandinavian countries.
Air Source Heat Pump Systems do not only save money over older and traditional systems of energy – they are also much more effective, with Air Source Heat Pumps able to provide three times the energy that is required by the Pump for it to run.
Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
The Air Source Heat Pump transfers energy from outside the home and into it. It can do so even at temperatures below -20c, because no matter how cold it is, there is always some heat within the air. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
So even during a harsh and cold Scottish winter, there will be no need to worry about receiving adequate heat. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. This fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas, which is warmed by the process. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. Instead of generating or converting heat, the Pump gradually increases existing heat.
So how does the Heat Pump Process work?
Using its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air.
The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.
Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many have extensive horror stories of dealing with the issues posed by a faulty boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps are simple and require only basic maintenance. Many of the components of an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting and come with strong warranties and guarantees to ensure you are protected from any potential technical issues. By virtue of their solid, 20 year lifespan, Air Source Heat Pumps can easily outlive boiler systems.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
