Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Traditional means of heating the home usually work by the generation or conversion of fuel into heat – i.e., an oil boiler works via oil fuel, a wood stove via burning wood – but an Air Heat Pump does not do this. Instead, the Air Source Heat Pump works by transferring existing the ambient heat in the air outside into the home. This transferring can be performed even in colder climates, as there is always some heat present in the air. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Added to the benefit of cost saving the benefit of the greater generation of energy by an Air Source Heat Pump. Air Source Heat Pumps can generate three times the energy that it requires to run..
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Even at temperatures below -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home, as there is always some ambient warmth in the air. The Air Source Heat Pump tends to be installed outdoors – usually at the side or the back of your property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. Instead of generating or converting heat, the Pump gradually increases existing heat.
So how does it all work?
Using its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air.
The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many people have had to deal with issues poised by a boiler failing.By virtue of their simple and intuitive design and components, Air Source Heat Pumps tend to require only basic maintenance and their components are often backed by strong warranties.Air Source Heat Pumps furthermore tend to have longer lifespans than Boilers, usually lasting a solid 20 years.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
