What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.

Whereas other heating systems, like wood stoves and oil boilers, work by burning fuel or by converting electricity to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not generate or convert energy into heat. They instead work by transferring the existing ambient heat in the air outside your home into your house. Since ambient heat is always present in the air, this transferring process can be conducted even in colder climates. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pump Systems are not just a great way to save money over older means of heating – they are also significantly more effective, able to provide three times the energy that they require to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

The Air Source Heat Pump transfers energy from outside the home and into it. It can do so even at temperatures below -20c, because no matter how cold it is, there is always some heat within the air. The Air Source Heat Pump tends to be installed outdoors – usually at the side or the back of your property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.

This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.

The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.

So how does it work?

Using its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air.

The refrigerant liquid is then turned into a gas which can be passed into the heating systems of the home – so radiators, hot water, etc.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.

Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.

A lot of people can provide extensive stories horror systems about an acting up boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity and intuitive design means they require very basic and simple maintenance.Backed by extensive warranties, many of the components that make up the Air Source Heat Pump are already long lasting. With a strong lifespan of 20 years, an Air Source Heat Pump can easily outlive other, older systems.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
