Air Source Heat Pumps Hirst, Scotland

Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.

Whereas Wooden Stoves and Oil boilers convert heat from fuel, and electric generation converts energy into heat, the Air Source Heat Pump does not convert or generate heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can be performed even in cold climates – with the market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps actually being the much colder Scandinavian countries.

Not only do heat pump systems cost less than systems like stoves, but they are often much more effective. An Air Source Heat Pump can provide up to three times more energy than the electricity it requires to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.

So, there is no need to worry about receiving adequate heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.

The Heat Pump works by ‘absorbing’ the ambient heat via its refrigerant fluid. Within the pump, this refrigerant fluid is circulated and compressed into a gas. This compression process increases the temperature of the gas, which is then cycled through your heating system – giving you warmth and hot water.

Rough, the process works as following.

With its refrigerant liquid, the Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the transferring of the heat occurs, the gas is condensed into liquid again, allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

By virtue of their relative simplicity and easy to maintain nature, an Air Source Heat Pump can avoid the myriad of issues posed to more traditional systems like boilers. Furthermore, many of the components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting as well and can come with extensive warranties to ensure you are protected. Typically they will last significantly longer than a boiler as well – on average a Heat Pump can last almost 20 years.

If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
