Air Source Heat Pumps Hawick, Scotland
Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.
So, whereas other heating systems work by burning fuel (i.e., a wood stove) or by converting electricity (solar panels) in order to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not actually create or generate heat in the first place. They instead work by transferring the existing ambient heat in the air outside your home into your house. Since ambient heat is always present in the air, this transferring process can be conducted even in colder climates. Many of the colder Scandinavian countries are actually market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Air Source Heat Pump Systems are not just a great way to save money over older means of heating – they are also significantly more effective, able to provide three times the energy that they require to run.
Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.
How Does It Work?
With a basic understanding of the Air Source Heat Pump, we can move onto the next question of how does it work?
In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IThe Air Source Heat Pump is capable of doing this at temperatures well below -15c.The Air Source Heat Pump is capable of doing this even in temperatures below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing heat from the air.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air into its refrigerant fluid. Within the pump, the refrigerant fluid is via a process of circulation, compressed into gas.The compression of the liquid into gas increases its temperature, and allows the gas to be cycled through your heating system to provide you warmth and hot water.
Rough, the process works as following.
Using its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.
What are the benefits
The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
Many people can provide stories about having to deal with an acting up boiler system – but these back and forth issues with a boiler are evaded by the simplicity and intuitive design of an Air Source Heat Pump. Many components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are designed to be long lasting and are backed by strong warranties. With an average lifespan of nearly 20 years an Air Source Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
