Air Source Heat Pumps Haddington, Scotland
A rising star in the world of alternative energy services, Air Source Pumps have become a popular means to cut the cost of energy bills – especially as older services become increasing expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.
Unlike other heating systems which generate or convert fuel (for example, wood or oil being burned in a stove or boiler, or the conversion of electricity into heat), Heat Pumps do not convert or generate heat. Rather, they transfer the existing (and always present) ambient heat in the air outside of the home into the home – a process that be performed even in colder climates. One of the leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps is actually Scandinavia, who have been leading the market since the 1970s.
Alongside the benefit of cost, Air Source Heat Pumps bring the benefit of being significantly more efficient at generating energy. Air Source Heat Pumps can generate three times the energy that it requires to run..
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.
The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. Instead of generating or converting heat, the Pump gradually increases existing heat.
So how does it all work?
With its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump is able to absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The refrigerant liquid is then turned into a gas which can be passed into the heating systems of the home – so radiators, hot water, etc.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.
Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.
With its relative simplicity and intuitive design, the myriad of issues and need for extensive repairs faced by systems like Boilers can be avoided by an Air Source Heat Pump. Many of the components that make up the Pump can carry extensive warranties and are designed to last long. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
