Air Source Heat Pumps Eyemouth, Scotland
A rising star in the world of alternative energy services, Air Source Pumps have become a popular means to cut the cost of energy bills – especially as older services become increasing expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. Even in colder climates, this process can be performed – with colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Air Source Heat Pumps provide not just a significant benefit to saving costs but are even more efficient at generating energy. Indeed, an Air Source Heat Pump can generate three times the energy that is required by it to run.
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So now that we know what an Air Source Heat Pump is, the next question is, how does it work?
In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.
So how does it all work?
With its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.
First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.
A lot of people can provide extensive stories horror systems about an acting up boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity and intuitive design means they require very basic and simple maintenance.Backed by extensive warranties, many of the components that make up the Air Source Heat Pump are already long lasting. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
