Air Source Heat Pumps Dykehead, Scotland

Air Source Heat Pumps are a rising star in the world of alternative energy services, offering a solid means by which to cut the growing cost of energy bills – especially as older heating services become increasingly expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

So, whereas other heating systems work by burning fuel (i.e., a wood stove) or by converting electricity (solar panels) in order to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not actually create or generate heat in the first place. The Air Source Heat Pump works instead by transferring existing ambient heat in the air outside the home into the home. Since ambient heat is always present in the air, this transferring process can be conducted even in colder climates. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pump Systems do not only save money over older and traditional systems of energy – they are also much more effective, with Air Source Heat Pumps able to provide three times the energy that is required by the Pump for it to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. The Air Source Heat Pump tends to be installed outdoors – usually at the side or the back of your property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.

So, there is no need to worry about receiving adequate heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.

The Pump works by absorbing the ambient heat in the air from the outside into a liquid refrigerant. Now inside the pump and with the liquid, it is circulated and compressed into a gas. This increases the temperature, which is then cycled through the heating system within your home, providing you with heating and hot water.

So how does it all work?

Using its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air.

The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.

Many have extensive horror stories of dealing with the issues posed by a faulty boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps are simple and require only basic maintenance. Air Source Heat Pumps also tend to be built from long lasting components, as well as strong warranties and guarantees that ensure you are insulated any technical issues. Air Source Heat Pumps also tend to be long lasting – with an average lifespan of 20 years.

If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
