Air Source Heat Pumps Dunipace, Scotland

With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Unlike other heating systems which generate or convert fuel (for example, wood or oil being burned in a stove or boiler, or the conversion of electricity into heat), Heat Pumps do not convert or generate heat. Rather, they transfer the existing (and always present) ambient heat in the air outside of the home into the home – a process that be performed even in colder climates. One of the leading markets in Heat Pumps is actually Scandinavia, who have been making use of the technology since the 70s.

Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper than systems such as stoves – they are also in many cases, much more effective. Air Source Heat Pumps can furthermore provide up to three times the energy than it takes to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.

How Does It Work?

Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?

In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IEven at temperatures well below -15c, the Air Source Heat Pump is fully capable of the process. It is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing heat from the air.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.

So how does it all work?

Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The refrigerant liquid becomes a gas, which is then compressed and passed into the homes heating systems – so radiators, hot water or underfloor heating systems.
As the transferring of the heat occurs, the gas is condensed into liquid again, allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.

Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.

Many people can provide stories about having to deal with an acting up boiler system – but these back and forth issues with a boiler are evaded by the simplicity and intuitive design of an Air Source Heat Pump. Many of the components that make up the Pump can carry extensive warranties and are designed to last long. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.

If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
