Air Source Heat Pumps Drongan, Scotland

A rising star in the world of alternative energy services, Air Source Pumps have become a popular means to cut the cost of energy bills – especially as older services become increasing expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.

Whereas other heating systems, like wood stoves and oil boilers, work by burning fuel or by converting electricity to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not generate or convert energy into heat. The Air Source Heat Pump works instead by transferring existing ambient heat in the air outside the home into the home. This can be performed even in colder climate, as there is always some ambient heat present in the air. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pumps provide not just a significant benefit to saving costs but are even more efficient at generating energy. Air Source Heat Pumps can generate three times the energy that it requires to run..

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IIt is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c.It is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing heat from the air.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.

This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.

The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.

So, to break it down.

The Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air into its refrigerant liquid.
The refrigerant liquid is compressed and becomes a gas, which is cycled through the homes heating systems – so radiators and hot water.
While the heat is transferred, the gas is condensed back into its liquid refrigerant form, ready to begin the whole process again.

What are the benefits

The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

A lot of people have experienced the deeply unpleasant matter of trying to get an acting up boiler to worth, with back and forths with engineers and plumbers trying to get them to work again. But Air Source Heat Pumps are relatively simple and require basic maintenance – often their components have long warranties that provide a lot of protection against breakage.Air Source Heat Pumps furthermore tend to have longer lifespans than Boilers, usually lasting a solid 20 years.

An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
