With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- How does it work?
- What are the benefits?
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.
Whereas Wooden Stoves and Oil boilers convert heat from fuel, and electric generation converts energy into heat, the Air Source Heat Pump does not convert or generate heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can easily performed even in colder climates and weather, with the colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in the technology.
Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper to run than systems like stoves, they’re also much more effective. An Air Source Heat Pump can provide up to three times more energy than the electricity it requires to run.
Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So now that we know what an Air Source Heat Pump is, the next question is, how does it work?
In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Even at temperatures below -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home, as there is always some ambient warmth in the air. The Air Source Heat Pump is usually installed outdoors, often at the side or back of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
So, there is no need to worry about receiving adequate heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
The air source heat pump works by absorbing the heat outside into a fluid within – a refrigerant. Here, the liquid is circulated and compressed into a gas. So the process causes the heat, now a gas, to increase in temperature before it is cycled through your homes heating system – providing you with warmth and hot water.
So how does it work? Roughly,
Using its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The refrigerant liquid becomes a gas, which is then compressed and passed into the homes heating systems – so radiators, hot water or underfloor heating systems.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.
What are the benefits
An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.
First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.
By virtue of their relative simplicity and easy to maintain nature, an Air Source Heat Pump can avoid the myriad of issues posed to more traditional systems like boilers. Many of the components of an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting and come with strong warranties and guarantees to ensure you are protected from any potential technical issues. By virtue of their solid, 20 year lifespan, Air Source Heat Pumps can easily outlive boiler systems.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
