What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.

So, whereas other heating systems work by burning fuel (i.e., a wood stove) or by converting electricity (solar panels) in order to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not actually create or generate heat in the first place. They instead work by transferring the existing ambient heat in the air outside your home into your house. This transferring can be performed even in colder climates, as there is always some heat present in the air. Many of the colder Scandinavian countries are actually market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Not just do Air Source Heat Pump Systems save money compared to older and more traditional systems of heating – they’re also significantly more effective, as Air Source Heat Pumps can provide three times the energy that is required by them to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

With a basic understanding of the Air Source Heat Pump, we can move onto the next question of how does it work?

The Air Source Heat Pump transfers energy from outside the home and into it. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.

So even during a harsh and cold Scottish winter, there will be no need to worry about receiving adequate heat. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.

The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.

Many people have long horror stories of dealing with a boiler system acting up, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity means they need only basic maintenance requirements, such as the cleaning of the filters. Furthermore, many of the components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting as well and can come with extensive warranties to ensure you are protected. Typically they will last significantly longer than a boiler as well – on average a Heat Pump can last almost 20 years.

An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
