What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.
Whereas other heating systems, like wood stoves and oil boilers, work by burning fuel or by converting electricity to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not generate or convert energy into heat. They instead work by transferring the existing ambient heat in the air outside your home into your house. Since ambient heat is always present in the air, this transferring process can be conducted even in colder climates. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Not only do heat pump systems cost less than systems like stoves, but they are often much more effective. An Air Source Heat Pump will provide three times the energy it requires to run.
Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
There is no need to worry about receiving heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.
So how does it all work?
With its refrigerant liquid, the Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat.
The refrigerant liquid becomes a gas, which is then compressed and passed into the homes heating systems – so radiators, hot water or underfloor heating systems.
As the transferring of the heat occurs, the gas is condensed into liquid again, allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.
First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many have extensive horror stories of dealing with the issues posed by a faulty boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps are simple and require only basic maintenance. Furthermore, many of the components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting as well and can come with extensive warranties to ensure you are protected. By virtue of their solid, 20 year lifespan, Air Source Heat Pumps can easily outlive boiler systems.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
