Air Source Heat Pumps Carluke, Scotland
Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Traditional means of heating the home usually work by the generation or conversion of fuel into heat – i.e., an oil boiler works via oil fuel, a wood stove via burning wood – but an Air Heat Pump does not do this. The Air Source Heat Pump works instead by transferring existing ambient heat in the air outside the home into the home. This can be performed even in colder climate, as there is always some ambient heat present in the air. Many of the colder Scandinavian countries are actually market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Air Source Heat Pumps provide not just a significant benefit to saving costs but are even more efficient at generating energy. Air Source Heat Pumps can generate three times the energy that it requires to run..
Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Even at temperatures below -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home, as there is always some ambient warmth in the air. The Air Source Heat Pump is usually installed outdoors, often at the side or back of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.
So even during a harsh and cold Scottish winter, there will be no need to worry about receiving adequate heat. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.
So how does it all work?
With its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump is able to absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
Many people have had to deal with issues poised by a boiler failing.By virtue of their simple and intuitive design and components, Air Source Heat Pumps tend to require only basic maintenance and their components are often backed by strong warranties.Air Source Heat Pumps furthermore tend to have longer lifespans than Boilers, usually lasting a solid 20 years.
If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
