Air Source Heat Pumps Banchory, Scotland
Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- How does it work?
- What are the benefits?
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. Rather Air Source Heat Pumps make use of the ambient warmth outside the house always present in the air, which is then transferred inside the house. Even in colder climates, this process can be performed – with colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper to run than systems like stoves, they’re also much more effective. Air Source Heat Pumps can furthermore provide up to three times the energy than it takes to run.
Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
So, there is no need to worry about receiving adequate heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.
So, to break it down.
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The refrigerant liquid is compressed and becomes a gas, which is cycled through the homes heating systems – so radiators and hot water.
As the heat is transferred, the gas is condensed back into a liquid to begin the process again.
What are the benefits
An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.
Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many people can provide stories about having to deal with an acting up boiler system – but these back and forth issues with a boiler are evaded by the simplicity and intuitive design of an Air Source Heat Pump. Many of the components that make up the Pump can carry extensive warranties and are designed to last long. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
