Air Source Heat Pumps Balloch, Scotland
Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But this raises a question – what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- How does it work?
- What are the benefits?
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.
So, whereas other heating systems work by burning fuel (i.e., a wood stove) or by converting electricity (solar panels) in order to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not actually create or generate heat in the first place. They instead work by transferring the existing ambient heat in the air outside your home into your house. This transferring can be performed even in colder climates, as there is always some heat present in the air. Indeed, many of the colder Scandinavian countries are market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps and have been since the 1970s.
Not only do heat pump systems cost less than systems like stoves, but they are often much more effective. Air Source Heat Pumps can furthermore provide up to three times the energy than it takes to run.
Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So, how does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air into its refrigerant fluid. Within the pump, this refrigerant fluid is circulated and compressed into a gas. This compression process increases the temperature of the gas, which is then cycled through your heating system – giving you warmth and hot water.
So how does it work?
With its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The liquid is then compressed into a gas and is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.
With its relative simplicity and intuitive design, the myriad of issues and need for extensive repairs faced by systems like Boilers can be avoided by an Air Source Heat Pump. Many components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are designed to be long lasting and are backed by strong warranties. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
