Air Source Heat Pumps have become an incredibly popular way to cut the cost of energy bills , especially as older heating means become more and more expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Whereas Wooden Stoves and Oil boilers convert heat from fuel, and electric generation converts energy into heat, the Air Source Heat Pump does not convert or generate heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can easily performed even in colder climates and weather, with the colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in the technology.
Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper than systems such as stoves – they are also in many cases, much more effective. An Air Source Heat Pump will provide three times the energy it requires to run.
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.
So even during a harsh and cold Scottish winter, there will be no need to worry about receiving adequate heat. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.
Rough, the process works as following.
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The refrigerant liquid becomes a gas, which is then compressed and passed into the homes heating systems – so radiators, hot water or underfloor heating systems.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.
What are the benefits
The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
Many have extensive experience dealing with the issues of an acting up boiler, and long back and forths with engineers and plumbers trying to get them to work properly. But unlike Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps are built out of relatively simple components and require basic maintenance, and are often backed by strong warranties.Air Source Heat Pumps boast a strong lifespan of some 20 years, able to outlast many older systems.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
