Should You Add a Solar Battery?

Solar panels often generate electricity during the daytime when household consumption may be relatively low. Without a battery, surplus electricity can be exported to the grid. A battery allows some of this surplus generation to be stored and used later, for example during the evening.
This can increase the proportion of your own solar-generated electricity that you use within your home and reduce the amount of electricity you need to purchase from the grid.
The level of self-consumption achieved will vary significantly depending on the size of the solar PV system, battery capacity, household electricity consumption and when electricity is used.
A correctly sized battery should be selected based on your expected solar generation and household consumption rather than simply choosing the largest battery available.
Earning Money From Surplus Electricity: The Smart Export Guarantee
Electricity generated by your solar panels that you don’t use or store can potentially earn you money when it is exported to the grid.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government-backed scheme under which qualifying electricity suppliers pay eligible small-scale generators for electricity exported to the grid.
Suppliers with at least 150,000 domestic electricity customers are mandatory SEG licensees and must offer SEG payments to eligible generators. Smaller suppliers can choose to participate voluntarily.
SEG suppliers determine their own tariff rates and terms, so export payments vary. Homeowners should therefore compare available export tariffs.

What About Home Energy Scotland Funding?
It is important to be clear about the current funding position.
The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan does not currently list standard solar PV as a standalone eligible measure for owner-occupiers.
Current Home Energy Scotland funding does include interest-free loan support of up to £5,000 for solar thermal and eligible hybrid solar PV/water-heating systems, subject to the scheme’s eligibility criteria and available funding.
Home Energy Scotland also provides grants and loans towards other eligible measures, including heat pumps and energy-efficiency improvements.

How Long Until Solar Panels Pay for Themselves?
Payback depends on the cost and performance of your system, your electricity consumption, how much generated electricity you use yourself and the amount you receive for exported electricity.
For Scotland, Energy Saving Trust’s current figures provide a useful independent benchmark.
Based on July 2026 energy prices, a typical solar PV installation in Stirling has an estimated payback period of approximately 11–12 years when export payments are included, depending on when electricity is used within the home.
Solar panels can continue generating electricity beyond their estimated payback period, although actual system performance, maintenance requirements, component life and future electricity and export prices will affect the overall financial return.
