Air Source Heat Pumps Waterside, Scotland

Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But this raises a question – what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

So, whereas other heating systems work by burning fuel (i.e., a wood stove) or by converting electricity (solar panels) in order to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not actually create or generate heat in the first place. They instead work by transferring the existing ambient heat in the air outside your home into your house. This can be performed even in colder climate, as there is always some ambient heat present in the air. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pump Systems do not only save money over older and traditional systems of energy – they are also much more effective, with Air Source Heat Pumps able to provide three times the energy that is required by the Pump for it to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So now that we know what an Air Source Heat Pump is, the next question is, how does it work?

The Air Source Heat Pump transfers energy from outside the home and into it. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. Instead of generating or converting heat, the Pump gradually increases existing heat.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

Many have extensive experience dealing with the issues of an acting up boiler, and long back and forths with engineers and plumbers trying to get them to work properly. But Air Source Heat Pumps are relatively simple and require basic maintenance – often their components have long warranties that provide a lot of protection against breakage.Air Source Heat Pumps furthermore tend to have longer lifespans than Boilers, usually lasting a solid 20 years.

If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
