What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.
Air Source Heat Pumps do not generate, convert or create heat, as Wooden Stoves or Electricity does. Instead, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can easily performed even in colder climates and weather, with the colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in the technology.
Not only do heat pump systems cost less than systems like stoves, but they are often much more effective. Air Source Heat Pumps can furthermore provide up to three times the energy than it takes to run.
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
In rough terms, an Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Even at temperatures below -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home, as there is always some ambient warmth in the air. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.
So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is cycled through your heating system to provide you with warmth and hot water. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.
Rough, the process works as following.
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
A lot of people can provide extensive stories horror systems about an acting up boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity and intuitive design means they require very basic and simple maintenance. Many components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are designed to be long lasting and are backed by strong warranties. With a strong lifespan of 20 years, an Air Source Heat Pump can easily outlive other, older systems.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
