Air Source Heat Pumps North Berwick, Scotland
Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.
Unlike other heating systems which generate or convert fuel (for example, wood or oil being burned in a stove or boiler, or the conversion of electricity into heat), Heat Pumps do not convert or generate heat. Rather, they transfer the existing (and always present) ambient heat in the air outside of the home into the home – a process that be performed even in colder climates. A leading market in Air Source Heat Pumps is actually Scandinavia, who since the 1970s have been making use of the technology.
Air Source Heat Pump Systems do not only save money over older and traditional systems of energy – they are also much more effective, with Air Source Heat Pumps able to provide three times the energy that is required by the Pump for it to run.
Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IEven at temperatures well below -15c, the Air Source Heat Pump is fully capable of the process. It is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing ambient heat from the air.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Heat Pump works via absorbing the heat into its refrigerant fluid. Within the pump, the refrigerant fluid is via a process of circulation, compressed into gas.The compression processes increases the temperature, and the gas is cycled through your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water.
Rough, the process works as following.
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the process is going on, the gas is condensed back into a liquid refrigerant, so the process can begin all over again.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
Many people have long horror stories of dealing with a boiler system acting up, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity means they need only basic maintenance requirements, such as the cleaning of the filters. Furthermore, many of the components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting as well and can come with extensive warranties to ensure you are protected. By virtue of their solid, 20 year lifespan, Air Source Heat Pumps can easily outlive boiler systems.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
