Air Source Heat Pumps New Stevenston, Scotland

Air Source Heat Pumps are a rising star in the world of alternative energy services, offering a solid means by which to cut the growing cost of energy bills – especially as older heating services become increasingly expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.

Whereas other heating systems generate heat by the burning of fuel (so for example, a wood or oil), or through the conversion of electricity, Heat Pumps never generate heat or even create it. Instead, the Heat Pump transfers the always present ambient heat in the air outside of the home into the home – a process that is able to be performed even in Colder Climates. One of the leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps is actually Scandinavia, who have been leading the market since the 1970s.

Air Source Heat Pumps provide not just a significant benefit to saving costs but are even more efficient at generating energy. Indeed, an Air Source Heat Pump can generate three times the energy that is required by it to run.

Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. It can do so even at temperatures below -20c, because no matter how cold it is, there is always some heat within the air. The Air Source Heat Pump is usually installed outdoors, often at the side or back of the property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.

Rough, the process works as following.

With its refrigerant liquid, the Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.

What are the benefits

An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.

Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.

With its relative simplicity and intuitive design, the myriad of issues and need for extensive repairs faced by systems like Boilers can be avoided by an Air Source Heat Pump. Many of the components that make up the Pump can carry extensive warranties and are designed to last long. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
