Air Source Heat Pumps Mossbank, Scotland
Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But this raises a question – what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- How does it work?
- What are the benefits?
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.
Air Source Heat Pumps do not generate, convert or create heat, as Wooden Stoves or Electricity does. Instead, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can be performed even in cold climates – with the market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps actually being the much colder Scandinavian countries.
Air Source Heat Pump Systems are not just a great way to save money over older means of heating – they are also significantly more effective, able to provide three times the energy that they require to run.
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. Instead of generating or converting heat, the Pump gradually increases existing heat.
So, for a breakdown.
The Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the heat in the air via its refrigerant liquid.
The liquid is turned into a gas, and then compressed – before being passed into the homes heating system (i.e., your radiators, underfloor heating systems and hot water).
As the heat is transferred, the gas is condensed back into a liquid to begin the process again.
What are the benefits
An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
Many people can provide stories about having to deal with an acting up boiler system – but these back and forth issues with a boiler are evaded by the simplicity and intuitive design of an Air Source Heat Pump.Backed by extensive warranties, many of the components that make up the Air Source Heat Pump are already long lasting. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
