Air Source Heat Pumps Mintlaw, Scotland

Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.

Traditional means of heating the home usually work by the generation or conversion of fuel into heat – i.e., an oil boiler works via oil fuel, a wood stove via burning wood – but an Air Heat Pump does not do this. They instead work by transferring the existing ambient heat in the air outside your home into your house. Since ambient heat is always present in the air, this transferring process can be conducted even in colder climates. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Not only do heat pump systems cost less than systems like stoves, but they are often much more effective. Air Source Heat Pumps can furthermore provide up to three times the energy than it takes to run.

Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IIt is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c.It is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing ambient heat from the air.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.

This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.

So the Heat Pump absorbs the heat from outside the house into its refrigerant liquid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.

So how does it all work?

With its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.

The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

Many have extensive horror stories of dealing with the issues posed by a faulty boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps are simple and require only basic maintenance. Furthermore, many of the components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting as well and can come with extensive warranties to ensure you are protected. Air Source Heat Pumps also tend to be long lasting – with an average lifespan of 20 years.

If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
