Air Source Heat Pumps Ladywood, Scotland

With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.

Traditional means of heating the home usually work by the generation or conversion of fuel into heat – i.e., an oil boiler works via oil fuel, a wood stove via burning wood – but an Air Heat Pump does not do this. The Air Source Heat Pump works instead by transferring existing ambient heat in the air outside the home into the home. This can be performed even in colder climate, as there is always some ambient heat present in the air. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pump Systems do not only save money over older and traditional systems of energy – they are also much more effective, with Air Source Heat Pumps able to provide three times the energy that is required by the Pump for it to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.

How Does It Work?

Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?

In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IEven at temperatures well below -15c, the Air Source Heat Pump is fully capable of the process. The Air Source Heat Pump is capable of doing this even in temperatures below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing heat from the air.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.

So how does it work? Roughly,

Using its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.
This refrigerant liquid then becomes a gas via a process of compression, and is in turn passed and cycled through the homes heating systems to provide you with warmth.
As the transferring of the heat occurs, the gas is condensed into liquid again, allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

Many people can provide stories about having to deal with an acting up boiler system – but these back and forth issues with a boiler are evaded by the simplicity and intuitive design of an Air Source Heat Pump. Many of the components that make up the Pump can carry extensive warranties and are designed to last long. With a strong lifespan of 20 years, an Air Source Heat Pump can easily outlive other, older systems.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
