Air Source Heat Pumps are a rising star in the world of alternative energy services, offering a solid means by which to cut the growing cost of energy bills – especially as older heating services become increasingly expensive to maintain. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump? How does it work?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.
So, whereas other heating systems work by burning fuel (i.e., a wood stove) or by converting electricity (solar panels) in order to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not actually create or generate heat in the first place. The Air Source Heat Pump works instead by transferring existing ambient heat in the air outside the home into the home. This transferring can be performed even in colder climates, as there is always some heat present in the air. Many of the colder Scandinavian countries are actually market leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Not just do Air Source Heat Pump Systems save money compared to older and more traditional systems of heating – they’re also significantly more effective, as Air Source Heat Pumps can provide three times the energy that is required by them to run.
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
With a basic understanding of the Air Source Heat Pump, we can move onto the next question of how does it work?
In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IIt is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c.The Air Source Heat Pump is capable of doing this even in temperatures below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing heat from the air.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. This fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas, which is warmed by the process. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. Instead of generating or converting heat, the Pump gradually increases existing heat.
Rough, the process works as following.
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The refrigerant liquid becomes a gas, which is then compressed and passed into the homes heating systems – so radiators, hot water or underfloor heating systems.
As the transferring of the heat occurs, the gas is condensed into liquid again, allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many people have had to deal with issues poised by a boiler failing. But Air Source Heat Pumps are relatively simple and require basic maintenance – often their components have long warranties that provide a lot of protection against breakage.Air Source Heat Pumps furthermore tend to have longer lifespans than Boilers, usually lasting a solid 20 years.
If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
