Air Source Heat Pumps Greenhead, Scotland

With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Unlike other heating systems which generate or convert fuel (for example, wood or oil being burned in a stove or boiler, or the conversion of electricity into heat), Heat Pumps do not convert or generate heat. Even in Colder Climates and Weather, the Heat Pump is able to transfer the ever present ambient heat in the ai outside of your home into it. One of the leaders in Air Source Heat Pumps is actually Scandinavia, who have been leading the market since the 1970s.

Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper than systems such as stoves – they are also in many cases, much more effective. An Air Source Heat Pump can provide up to three times more energy than the electricity it requires to run.

Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So now that we know what an Air Source Heat Pump is, the next question is, how does it work?

In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IThe Air Source Heat Pump is capable of doing this at temperatures well below -15c.It is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing ambient heat from the air.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’ for the heating of your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.

So how does it all work?

Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the transferring of the heat occurs, the gas is condensed into liquid again, allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.

A lot of people can provide extensive stories horror systems about an acting up boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity and intuitive design means they require very basic and simple maintenance. Many components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are designed to be long lasting and are backed by strong warranties. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
