What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can easily performed even in colder climates and weather, with the colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in the technology.
Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper than systems such as stoves – they are also in many cases, much more effective. Air Source Heat Pumps can furthermore provide up to three times the energy than it takes to run.
Heat Pumps commercial manufacturing began in the 1970s with a market developing in Europe, primarily Scandinavia. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs energy from outside the home and transfers it into the home. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. The Air Source Heat Pump is usually installed outdoors, often at the side or back of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The Pump works by absorbing the ambient heat in the air from the outside into a liquid refrigerant.Inside the heat pump, it circulates and is compressed into a gas. So the process causes the heat, now a gas, to increase in temperature before it is cycled through your homes heating system – providing you with warmth and hot water.
So, to break it down.
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The Heat Pumps liquid refrigerant is compressed into a gas which is cycled through the homes heating systems.
As the heat is transferred, the gas is condensed back into a liquid to begin the process again.
What are the benefits
The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.
Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many have extensive horror stories of dealing with the issues posed by a faulty boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps are simple and require only basic maintenance. Air Source Heat Pumps also tend to be built from long lasting components, as well as strong warranties and guarantees that ensure you are insulated any technical issues. Typically they will last significantly longer than a boiler as well – on average a Heat Pump can last almost 20 years.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
