With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- How does it work?
- What are the benefits?
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.
Whereas other heating systems, like wood stoves and oil boilers, work by burning fuel or by converting electricity to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not generate or convert energy into heat. Instead, the Air Source Heat Pump works by transferring existing the ambient heat in the air outside into the home. Since ambient heat is always present in the air, this transferring process can be conducted even in colder climates. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper to run than systems like stoves, they’re also much more effective. An Air Source Heat Pump will provide three times the energy it requires to run.
Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So now that we know what an Air Source Heat Pump is, the next question is, how does it work?
The Air Source Heat Pump transfers energy from outside the home and into it. Ambient warmth in the air means that even at temperatures of -20c, the Air Source Heat Pump can transfer heat into the home. The Air Source Heat Pump is usually installed outdoors, often at the side or back of the property.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
So, there is no need to worry about receiving adequate heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
The Air Source Heat Pump works by absorbing the heat in the air into a liquid refrigerant.Inside the heat pump, it circulates and is compressed into a gas. This increases the temperature, which is then cycled through the heating system within your home, providing you with heating and hot water.
So, for a breakdown.
Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The liquid is turned into a gas, and then compressed – before being passed into the homes heating system (i.e., your radiators, underfloor heating systems and hot water).
As the heat is transferred, the gas is condensed back into a liquid to begin the process again.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.
A lot of people can provide extensive stories horror systems about an acting up boiler system, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity and intuitive design means they require very basic and simple maintenance.Backed by extensive warranties, many of the components that make up the Air Source Heat Pump are already long lasting. With an average lifespan of nearly 20 years an Air Source Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler.
An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
