Air Source Heat Pumps Farley, Scotland

With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Air Source Heat Pumps do not generate, convert or create heat, as Wooden Stoves or Electricity does. Rather Air Source Heat Pumps make use of the ambient warmth outside the house always present in the air, which is then transferred inside the house. Even in colder climates, this process can be performed – with colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pumps provide not just a significant benefit to saving costs but are even more efficient at generating energy. Air Source Heat Pumps can generate three times the energy that it requires to run..

Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?

In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IEven at temperatures well below -15c, the Air Source Heat Pump is fully capable of the process. It is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing heat from the air.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.

Rough, the process works as following.

Using its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the transferring of the heat occurs, the gas is condensed into liquid again, allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.

Many have extensive experience dealing with the issues of an acting up boiler, and long back and forths with engineers and plumbers trying to get them to work properly.By virtue of their simple and intuitive design and components, Air Source Heat Pumps tend to require only basic maintenance and their components are often backed by strong warranties.Air Source Heat Pumps are likewise tend to have a longer lifespan than a Boiler, often lasting a solid 20 years.

An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
