What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.
Heat Pumps do not generate or convert heat from fuel, as do Oil Boilers or Wood Stoves do. Rather, they transfer the existing (and always present) ambient heat in the air outside of the home into the home – a process that be performed even in colder climates. A leading market in Air Source Heat Pumps is actually Scandinavia, who since the 1970s have been making use of the technology.
Added to the benefit of cost saving the benefit of the greater generation of energy by an Air Source Heat Pump. An Air Source Heat Pump can actually generate three times the energy that it requires to run..
Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?
In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IThe Air Source Heat Pump is capable of doing this at temperatures well below -15c.It is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing heat from the air.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.
There is no need to worry about receiving heat during a harsh Scottish winter. Indeed, given the Pump’s popularity in the colder Scandinavian climate, one shouldn’t worry about the impact of Scottish weather on the Heat Pump’s ability to operate in a colder climate.
The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.
So how does it all work?
Using its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat in the air.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the process is going on, the gas is condensed back into a liquid refrigerant, so the process can begin all over again.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.
Many people have had to deal with issues poised by a boiler failing. But Air Source Heat Pumps are relatively simple and require basic maintenance – often their components have long warranties that provide a lot of protection against breakage.Air Source Heat Pumps furthermore tend to have longer lifespans than Boilers, usually lasting a solid 20 years.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
