Air Source Heat Pumps Dalgety Bay, Scotland

Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Heat Pumps do not generate or convert heat from fuel, as do Oil Boilers or Wood Stoves do. Even in Colder Climates and Weather, the Heat Pump is able to transfer the ever present ambient heat in the ai outside of your home into it. One of the leading markets in Heat Pumps is actually Scandinavia, who have been making use of the technology since the 70s.

Heat Pump Systems aren’t just cheaper to run than systems like stoves, they’re also much more effective. An Air Source Heat Pump will provide three times the energy it requires to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. Heat Pumps have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

Now we know what exactly an Air Source Heat Pump is, our next question is how does it actually work?

Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.

This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.

The Heat Pump ‘absorbs’ the heat outside the home into its refrigerant fluid. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So there is no generation of heat, just the gradual increasing of an existing warmth.

So how does it all work?

Using its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air.

The refrigerant liquid is then compressed, becoming a gas, and this is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

With its relative simplicity and intuitive design, the myriad of issues and need for extensive repairs faced by systems like Boilers can be avoided by an Air Source Heat Pump. Many of the components that make up the Pump can carry extensive warranties and are designed to last long. On average a Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler, with a lifespan of 20 years.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
