Air Source Heat Pumps Cove, Scotland
Air Source Heat Pumps are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to heat the home, especially with people who are looking to save money and cut the cost of bills as traditional means become more and more expensive to maintain. But this raises a question – what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- How does it work?
- What are the benefits?
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.
Air Source Heat Pumps do not generate, convert or create heat, as Wooden Stoves or Electricity does. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can easily performed even in colder climates and weather, with the colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in the technology.
Air Source Heat Pumps provide not just a significant benefit to saving costs but are even more efficient at generating energy. An Air Source Heat Pump can actually generate three times the energy that it requires to run..
Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.
The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The Heat Pump then circulates the refrigerant fluid and compresses it into a gas, a process which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.
So how does it work? Roughly,
With its refrigerant liquid, the Heat Pump can absorb the ambient heat.
This refrigerant liquid then becomes a gas via a process of compression, and is in turn passed and cycled through the homes heating systems to provide you with warmth.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.
What are the benefits
An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.
First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.
Many people have long horror stories of dealing with a boiler system acting up, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity means they need only basic maintenance requirements, such as the cleaning of the filters. Many of the components of an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting and come with strong warranties and guarantees to ensure you are protected from any potential technical issues. Typically they will last significantly longer than a boiler as well – on average a Heat Pump can last almost 20 years.
If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
