Air Source Heat Pumps Brightons, Scotland

With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But what exactly is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Whereas other heating systems, like wood stoves and oil boilers, work by burning fuel or by converting electricity to generate heat, Heat Pumps do not generate or convert energy into heat. The Air Source Heat Pump works instead by transferring existing ambient heat in the air outside the home into the home. This transferring can be performed even in colder climates, as there is always some heat present in the air. Indeed, since the 1970s, many of the colder Scandinavian countries have actually led the market in Air Source Heat Pumps.

Air Source Heat Pump Systems are not just a great way to save money over older means of heating – they are also significantly more effective, able to provide three times the energy that they require to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So now that we know what an Air Source Heat Pump is, the next question is, how does it work?

The Air Source Heat Pump transfers energy from outside the home and into it. It can do so even at temperatures below -20c, because no matter how cold it is, there is always some heat within the air. Typically, the Air Source Heat Pump will be installed outdoors, often at the back or side of the property.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.

This can banish the potential worry regarding the receiving of adequate warmth during a particularly harsh Scottish winter. Given the Pumps success in the often much colder Scandinavian climate (a market leader in the technology), one shouldn’t worry too much about whether it will be able to provide your home adequate heat.

The Pump works by absorbing the ambient heat in the air from the outside into a liquid refrigerant.Inside the heat pump, it circulates and is compressed into a gas. The circulation process increases the temperature of the gas – which is then cycled through your homes heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water.

To break it down.

The Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air into its refrigerant liquid.
The refrigerant liquid is compressed and becomes a gas, which is cycled through the homes heating systems – so radiators and hot water.
While the heat is transferred, the gas is condensed back into its liquid refrigerant form, ready to begin the whole process again.

What are the benefits

An Air Source Heat Pump brings a variety of benefits.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

Many people have long horror stories of dealing with a boiler system acting up, but Air Source Heat Pumps relative simplicity means they need only basic maintenance requirements, such as the cleaning of the filters. Furthermore, many of the components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are long lasting as well and can come with extensive warranties to ensure you are protected. Typically they will last significantly longer than a boiler as well – on average a Heat Pump can last almost 20 years.

An Air Source Heat Pump also cuts out the need for deliveries of fuel – as are required by equipment such as oil boilers.
