Air Source Heat Pumps Bishopton, Scotland

Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
  • How does it work?
  • What are the benefits?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is in a lot of ways like a sort of ‘reverse’ fridge. Where a fridge extracts heat from its interior, an Air Source Heat Pump extracts it from the ambient air outside the home.

Whereas Wooden Stoves and Oil boilers convert heat from fuel, and electric generation converts energy into heat, the Air Source Heat Pump does not convert or generate heat. An Air Source Heat Pump insteads transfers ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. This process can be performed even in cold climates – with the market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps actually being the much colder Scandinavian countries.

Air Source Heat Pump Systems do not only save money over older and traditional systems of energy – they are also much more effective, with Air Source Heat Pumps able to provide three times the energy that is required by the Pump for it to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. The popularity of Heat Pumps is relatively recent in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. This fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas, which is warmed by the process. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. So rather than generating heat or converting it, the Heat Pump works by gradually increasing existing heat.

So how does the Heat Pump Process work?

Using its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air.

The liquid is then compressed into a gas and is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.

What are the benefits

The Air Source Heat Pump has a lot of pros.

First Maintenance rarely poses any issues for Air Source Heat Pumps.

With its relative simplicity and intuitive design, the myriad of issues and need for extensive repairs faced by systems like Boilers can be avoided by an Air Source Heat Pump. Many components that make up an Air Source Heat Pump are designed to be long lasting and are backed by strong warranties. With an average lifespan of nearly 20 years an Air Source Heat Pump will easily outlive a Boiler.

Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
