Air Source Heat Pumps Bannockburn, Scotland
Air Source Pumps have become one of the most popular means to heat people’s homes in Scotland – especially among those who are eager to save and cut down the growing costs of energy bills (which among traditional heating means have only continued to grow). But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?
- What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air Source Heat Pumps can be thought of as being much like a reverse fridge. Where a fridge extracts the heat from its interior, Air Source Heat Pump makes use of the ambient heat found in the air outside of the home.
Unlike Wooden Stoves or Oil Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps do not convert fuel into heat, and unlike electrical generation, do not convert energy into heat. Instead, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient warmth in the air outside of the house into the home. Even in colder climates, this process can be performed – with colder Scandinavian countries being a market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps.
Alongside the benefit of cost, Air Source Heat Pumps bring the benefit of being significantly more efficient at generating energy. An Air Source Heat Pump can actually generate three times the energy that it requires to run..
Heat Pumps first saw wide scale manufacturing on a commercial level in the 1970s – with a large market for them developing in Europe and Scandinavia. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.
How Does It Work?
So now that we know what an Air Source Heat Pump is, the next question is, how does it work?
Roughly, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers the ambient heat from outside the home and into it – and can even do so in temperatures below -20c. No matter how cold it is, there is always a small amount of heat in the air. Heat Pumps tend to be installed outdoors, often besides or behind the home.
Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. The Heat Pump effectively extracts ‘free’ energy always available. This limited, ambient heat is always useful in providing warmth to your home.
The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.
The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. To provide you with warmth and hot water, the heated gas is cycled through your heating system. Instead of generating or converting heat, the Pump gradually increases existing heat.
So how does the Heat Pump Process work?
Using its liquid refrigerant, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat in the air.
The liquid is then compressed into a gas and is cycled through the heating systems of the home.
As the heat transfers, the gas is condensed again – back into the liquid refrigerant – allowing the process to continue.
What are the benefits
Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.
Firstly, Maintenance is rarely an issue for Air Source Heat Pumps.
A lot of people have experienced the deeply unpleasant matter of trying to get an acting up boiler to worth, with back and forths with engineers and plumbers trying to get them to work again. But unlike Boilers, Air Source Heat Pumps are built out of relatively simple components and require basic maintenance, and are often backed by strong warranties.Air Source Heat Pumps furthermore tend to have longer lifespans than Boilers, usually lasting a solid 20 years.
Likewise, if you’re looking to replace a fuel-based system, you’ll be cutting out the need for any deliveries of materials like oil.
