Air Source Heat Pumps Abington, Scotland

With energy bills growing for practically everyone, Air Source Heat Pumps are rapidly becoming a popular alternative to many traditional means of heating, offering ways to cut bills and save cash. But what is an Air Source Heat Pump?

  • What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

In a way, Air Source Heat Pumps are a lot like a reverse fridge, extracting the heat from the air outside in a manner similar to how a fridge extracts heat from its interior.

Whereas Wooden Stoves and Oil boilers convert heat from fuel, and electric generation converts energy into heat, the Air Source Heat Pump does not convert or generate heat. Rather Air Source Heat Pumps make use of the ambient warmth outside the house always present in the air, which is then transferred inside the house. This process can be performed even in cold climates – with the market leader in Air Source Heat Pumps actually being the much colder Scandinavian countries.

Air Source Heat Pump Systems are not just a great way to save money over older means of heating – they are also significantly more effective, able to provide three times the energy that they require to run.

Heat Pumps were first manufactured on a commercial level in the 1970s, with a huge market for them developing in Europe – Scandinavia especially. But they have only recently become popular in the UK.

How Does It Work?

So how exactly does an Air Source Heat Pump work?

In simple terms, the Air Source Heat Pump transfers heat in the air from outside the home into it. IIt is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c.It is capable of doing this even in temperatures well below -15c. The Heat Pump is excellent at drawing heat from the air.

Effectively, the heat pump extracts this freely available energy all year round – as even the limited ambient heat is able to provide a ‘ground source’. So the Heat Pump effectively extracts the freely available energy all year round, as even limited or ambient heat can provide a source of warmth for your home.

The use of ambient heat sometimes worries people, as they often believe that due to the cold Scottish weather, they might not be able to generate a large enough amount of heat with the Air Pump. This shouldn’t concern you, as the Air Source heat Pump has a long history of success in the (much colder) Scandinavian countries.

The process works by having the refrigerant liquid absorb the heat from outside the home. The refrigerant fluid is then circulated and compressed into a gas – which increases its temperature. This gas is then circulated and cycled via your heating system, providing you with warmth and hot water. Instead of generating or converting heat, the Pump gradually increases existing heat.

So how does it work? Roughly,

Via its refrigerant liquid, the Air Source Heat Pump absorbs the ambient heat.
The liquid is then compressed and becomes a gas which is passed and cycled through the homes heating systems, providing you with warmth and hot water.
As the transfer of the heat is undergoing, the gas is condensed back into liquid refrigerant, allowing the process to occur all over again.

What are the benefits

Air Source Heat Pumps come with a myriad of advantages.

First off, Maintenance, often a real issue for a lot of other systems, is of no real problem for a Heat Pump.

A lot of people have experienced the deeply unpleasant matter of trying to get an acting up boiler to worth, with back and forths with engineers and plumbers trying to get them to work again. But Air Source Heat Pumps are relatively simple and require basic maintenance – often their components have long warranties that provide a lot of protection against breakage.Air Source Heat Pumps furthermore tend to have longer lifespans than Boilers, usually lasting a solid 20 years.

If you’re looking to replace a fuel based system, an Air Source Heat Pump has no need for any resource deliveries – meaning an end to constant deliveries of materials like oil.
