Air Source Heat Pumps: What are the most common misconceptions?

Heat pumps transfer existing heat energy from the ambient air, into your home to heat radiators and hot water. They are an incredibly efficient method of heating your home: But there is much misinformation online about them. What’s right and what’s not? Let’s look at some of the most common misconceptions about heat pumps to break them down.

Heat Pumps don’t work in Scotland.

Starting off with the concern we hear most! Fortunately, this is untrue. Many believe that it is too cold in Scotland, especially in the highlands, for heat pumps to work. Heat pumps are fully functional up to -21°C. They may have to work harder – but the same can be said for all central heating systems during the colder months. The average efficiency in Scotland is almost 400% efficient.

They can’t be installed in Old Houses.

Heat pumps can absolutely be installed in older homes! Greener Energy has installed pumps in houses that are hundreds of years old. The main concern when fitting a heat pump system to an older house is its heat retention. Often the solid walls and lack of insulation causes the house to be colder and harder to heat. This doesn’t mean it isn’t suitable! Each system is tailored to the house it’s installed in, and you may just need a bigger pump to meet the heat demands of your home, which would be the same for any heating system.

They’re nowhere near as hot as a gas boiler!

This one is partially true – Gas boilers tend to run at 70-80°C, whereas heat pumps can reach 50-55°C comfortably and heat the hot water up to 60°C. That doesn’t mean you’ll be sitting in a cold bath or freezing on the sofa. Heat Pumps produce plenty of heat to ensure your comfort and will still achieve a room temperature of up to 24°C, just as a Gas boiler will. They also save on waste by not heating up water too hot that you will need to cool anyway. When assessing your home, we will ensure you have enough radiators in your home to fully heat it.

Heat pumps take too long to install.

Our team takes from just two to four days depending on how complex the installation is! This time can vary based on how many radiators are being installed or swapped, but it is a very quick process. We provide portable heaters and install the hot water cylinder on the first day, so you never go without heat or hot water. Most of our customers say you never would have known we were there!

You need to be on benefits to qualify for the grants.

The current Air Source Heat Pump Grants are NOT means tested and therefore your income situation is not relevant. So long as you own your home, and the product is suitable for your home.

Heat Pumps are too expensive – Electricity costs too much!

An ASHP works at a high efficiency at temperatures of 0°C and above, but they do require more electricity the colder it is. A Standalone heat pump system is more expensive to run in Scotland due to the colder weather in comparison to Gas, due to the low comparison cost per kwh of energy. This is why we recommend a hybrid system for gas customers, which switches between a gas boiler and heat pump, always giving you the cheapest available option based on the weather and your energy tariffs.

Heat Pumps are too noisy!

Many of the older models of heat pump have loud fans and could be heard from an open window or neighbouring garden. However, most newer models are incredibly quiet and have been awarded the quiet mark.
